A complete, practical checklist of the documents you need before filing your income tax return — for salaried employees, freelancers, and business owners.

For Everyone

  • PAN and Aadhaar
  • Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS)
  • Bank account details for refund credit

For Salaried Employees

  • Form 16 from your employer
  • Rent receipts if claiming HRA
  • Home loan interest certificate, if applicable

For Freelancers and Business Owners

  • Books of account or income/expense summary
  • GST returns filed during the year, if registered
  • Bank statements for the financial year

For Everyone with Investments

  • Section 80C investment proofs (PPF, ELSS, life insurance)
  • Section 80D health insurance premium receipts
  • Capital gains statements from brokers or mutual fund houses
